About Alpha Zeta
Alpha Zeta Chapter History {1973-2023}
Birth of Alpha Zeta.
In 1971, Arkansas State University was void of any African American Greek letter organizations. A requirement of the school for the formation of a national fraternity was to start a club and function as one body. To meet this requirement, The Ebony Esquires was formed at the time, there were approximately 6,100 students, with Black students numbering less than one hundred. These young men met monthly in the Carl R. Reng Center, which offered an opportunity for bonding and fostered a sense of brotherhood. As one member stated, “We wanted to belong to something, from a heritage standpoint. We didn’t let anything stop us.” Dr. Charles Calvin Smith, a history professor and the first black faculty on the campus, was a man that The Ebony Esquires admired, often seeking advice and support from him.
On December 13, 1972, Robert Moore, Dean of Students wrote a letter to Brother Warren Berry, District Representative, in support of bringing a chapter of Omega Psi Phi to the campus. Mr. Moore wrote, “We have had a local group operating for quite some time now and I believe they have made good progress and that sometime during the Spring semester we would be agreeable to installing a chapter on the campus.” The Xi Rho Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc, located in Forrest City, Arkansas also saw this need and embarked on a mission to procure young men of excellence who they felt exemplified the Four Cardinal Principles of Omega. Their quest was satisfied with their procurement of fifteen young men who met the criteria that Omega strived to uphold. The request for the Alpha Zeta charter was approved at the Fall 1972 Supreme Council meeting under the leadership of the 28th Grand Basileus, James Avery. On March 5, 1973, the application for undergraduate chapter charter was submitted and on April 11, 1973, the chapter was chartered. The Statement by the District Representative read, “These men are to be commended for their endurance to become Omega men. They possess no less than the highest quality of Manhood. Therefore, I recommend that the chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc be established upon the campus of the Arkansas State University, Jonesboro, Arkansas.”
In the spring of 1973, Freddie Patrick, Thomas Baskin, Willie Jones, Joseph Black, Larry Ward, Freddie Walker, Ernest Monts, Malcholm Reese, Hershel Jones, Woodrow Keon, Jerry Cheatom, Maurice Hopkins, Genard Medley, Jerry
Williams, and Ronnie Johnson formed the first line, the “Genesis Line”. These young men were initiated under the direction of Brother Quranner Cotledge, Spring 1969 Tau Sigma chapter, who is the first Dean of Pledges of the Alpha Zeta Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. Also, through this process came the first advisor of the Alpha Zeta Chapter, Dr. Charles Calvin Smith.
Over the past fifty years, the brothers of Alpha Zeta have continued to endure and possess the highest quality of manhood. They have excelled in their respective professional industries including medicine, education, business, military and entrepreneurship. While we are proud of this legacy, what we hold most dear to our hearts is Alpha Zeta’s philosophy, “Nuthin’ Better, Nuthin’ Greater!”
